Why: I hopelessly in love with Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives and try to visit Triple D joints wherever I go. Since I’ve seen tons of episodes with divine Denver eateries, I had to chow down at one. I was on my way to go hiking and decided to scope out restaurants in the direction of the park. It just so happens that Sam’s No. 3, a Triple D breakfast bonanza, was right on the way to the mountain. Score! I recently, and jealously, watched Guy Fieri bite into a thick, crispy waffle and thick bacon at Sam’s No. 3 so I already knew what I was going to order: The Waffle Sandwich.

I consider myself a waffle connoisseur of sorts but this waffle was unlike any I had before. It was thick, dense, and had a great sweet aftertaste. Typically, restaurant waffles are fluffy, light, and wither when you take your first bite or drop a little bit of syrup on them. Not this waffle. It stayed crispy after I applied butter and sopped up egg yolk excellently.

One of my favorite things about waffles is their ability to absorb my over easy egg yolks. This waffle was filling yet I didn’t have to stuff myself to finish the breakfast. I was able to eat everything on the plate and felt satisfied not sick. I think that’s the recipe for a good portion. It’s not to the point where you stuff yourself but you feel like you had a good meal and have a warm belly afterwards. I do love taking leftovers home to enjoy the next day; however, there’s also something to be said about a restaurant that knows what a perfect portion for one meal is. I also tasted the chorizo and cheddar cheese omelet, which was classically southwestern, crunchy, and came with wonderful green chili.

Needless to say I was happy to have about an hour drive before hiking to digest; although, Sam’s No. 3 did give me enough energy to get through my hike and work off those bacon slices. In addition to the massive menu that will satisfy any craving, the staff was courteous and kept me updated on my order. I, along with the rest of downtown Denver, made a stop at Sam’s No. 3 that Saturday, which made the food take longer that usual. Whatever you’re in the mood for, Sam’s No. 3 has it and if you’re hungry or even verging on hunger, make a stop there. Based on the many enticing meals I saw around the restaurant, anything you order at Sam’s No. 3 will be No. 1.
