Why: As an Italian girl, I love to find fresh sauces, crunchy breads, and excellent cheeses. The calzone at the Mellow Mushroom combined all of my favorite ingredients into one crisp dough pocket; I even snuck in some vegetables! It tasted fresh, wheaty, and the cheesy was creamy. What Mellow Mushroom is known for is their dough, but I found the combination of all the ingredients.
When the plate was first sat in front of me, I noticed the smell. The mozzarella mixed with the broccoli brought a growl to my stomach. The fresh, steamy smell of the broccoli and the sour-sweet fragrance of the mozzarella and parmesan burst from the shell on the first cut. And the first cut? Crunch of the dough and of the parmesan on the outside. I had to dip it in the sauce before I put the first bite into my mouth. The burst of all the flavors in my mouth made my Italian heart ecstatic.
The sauce added the extra acidity I craved and it had a wonderful blend oregano, garlic, and spices. In addition to the flavors of the dish, the calzone itself was huge. It’s definitely a two meal dish, which is perfect for a lot of people who love leftovers. When you order the calzone, you can customize it in anyway you want. All of the pizza toppings are up for grabs but be careful, if you add a ton of toppings it can get a bit pricey. Also, any of the pizzas can be made into a calzone; an excellent idea from Mellow Mushroom.
In addition to the calzones, the pizza is favored by guests along with their great array of salads and other top menu items. The staff is always friendly and attentive. I don’t think I ever had to ask for a refill and our waitress came with a box in hand after I finished my meal. Didn’t even have to ask for it. It’s always a good idea to be prepared when walking up to a table. Whether it’s a water pitcher or a box for leftovers, guests appreciate the proactive service.
When I’m craving a great homemade dough, well-spiced and blended marinara, and oozing cheese, I head to the Mellow Mushroom for their calzone. If you’re in the Tempe area, take a trip to the Mellow Mushroom to satisfy your pizza or Italian cravings.
